What is PRINCE2 Agile®?

As the name suggests, PRINCE2 Agile® is an extension to the PRINCE2® project management methodology. It describes how to adapt PRINCE2® in the most effective way when combining it with agile behaviors, concepts frameworks, and techniques.

The PRINCE2® methodology is commonly used in the project management approach, and it is increasingly being used in conjunction with agile in the world of today. As more organizations adopt the agile methodology, the need for guidance on how to use PRINCE2® in an agile environment grows accordingly.

In simple terms, PRINCE2® and agile each have their own strengths and when they complement each other, they create a holistic approach to managing projects in an environment that adopts the agile methodology.

The strength of PRINCE2® lies in project direction and management. However, it provides little focus on the field of product delivery. On the contrary, Agile has a very strong focus on product delivery but dwells a little on the project management and direction. Hence, the combination of PRINCE2® and Agile addresses all three areas (Project direction, management, and delivery).

It is very important to see the combination as a blend and a mixture rather than each working on its own. Individuals or organizations directing and managing projects in an agile context need to adopt agile disciplines and behaviors. Similarly, those using Agile in the field of product delivery need to incorporate the PRINCE2® methodology to stay in control by ensuring that the project remains viable.

Contrary to misconceptions that the Agile framework is limited to IT, the use of agile has now gone beyond IT and is being used in more challenging situations. Therefore, as the need for agile frameworks to work in a project context increases, established and internationally recognized organizations such as AXELOS have deemed it fit to provide guidance on how to make things work. This is one of the reasons why PRINCE2 Agile® can into existence. PRINCE2 Agile® provides guidance for tailoring PRINCE2 to work in the most effective way in an agile context.

The history of PRINCE2 Agile® started in 2016 when AXELOS realized the PRINCE2 methodology itself did not cover all aspects of the project (i.e the delivery aspect). Although, PRINCE2 was built to be a flexible method which can be tailored to the most suitable delivery mechanism. It was realized that in some cases such as software development and in the IT industry they needed to apply agile techniques to ensure quick updates of software, software delivery, websites, etc. Hence the need to put a methodology in place to solve the problem.
