PRINCE2 Agile® Methodology

PRINCE2 Agile® methodology is a response to the ever-growing need for organizations to adopt agile in their project environments. As more organizations adopt agile, they also need guidance on how to use it in conjunction with project management. From the name, it is obvious that PRINCE2 Agile® is a combination of PRINCE2 and Agile methods. However, before we go on to discuss the methodology, we need to have a basic understanding of the PRINCE2 Methodology, the Agile methodology and how they both interrelate.

PRINCE2 (PRojects IN Controlled Environments) is a project management and governance framework that more than 150 countries currently adopt. Furthermore, PRINCE2 methodology can be applied to any project, regardless of the size, type, duration, complexity, and scope.

The PRINCE2 methodology encompasses four integrated elements. The elements are seven principles, seven themes, seven processes, and the project environment. The principles, themes, and processes are listed below:

PRINCE2® Principles

The principles are what guide the project. PRINCE2® methodology is based on the following principles:

〉 Continued business justification

〉 Learning from experience

〉 Defined roles and responsibilities

〉 Management by stages

 Manage by exception

〉 A focus on products

〉 Tailoring to suit the project environment

PRINCE2® Themes

In PRINCE2 projects, these 7 themes need to be enforced throughout the project life-cycle:

〉 Business case

〉 Organization

〉 Quality

〉 Plans

〉 Risk

〉 Change

〉 Progress

PRINCE2® Processes

PRINCE2 adopts the following processes during the project lifecycle:

〉 Starting up a project.

〉 Directing a project.

〉 Initiating a project.

〉 Controlling a stage.

〉 Managing product delivery.

〉 Managing stage boundaries.

〉 Closing a project.

For each of these processes, there is a checklist for activities, responsibilities, and guidance on how to deliver projects. To know more about the PRINCE2® Methodology, visit our “PRINCE2 Methodology” page

When combining PRINCE2® with Agile, it is important to know what Agile is. The Agile Alliance defines Agile as “the ability to create and respond to change in order to succeed in an uncertain and turbulent environment”. Agile methodologies are about delivering good products to customers by operating in an environment that treats people as the most important part of that environment. As a result, Agile approaches depend on shared communication between the development team and business users throughout the project. The Agile methodologies are based on four values and they are: Individuals and interactions over processes and tools: Although Agile places value on the processes and tools used in business, more priority is placed on the individual. As a result, Agile methods involve the use of tools that will amplify an individual’s effectiveness and processes that will encourage better communication among people in the business.   Working software over comprehensive documentation: It is common knowledge that all projects require some form of documentation. However, Agile teams allocate more time to the development of the product rather than its documentation, except the documentation will provide value to the project and does not hinder the progress of the project.   Customer collaboration over contract negotiation: From previous observations, customers and vendors have used contracts as shields or excuses to not deliver quality. To this end, Agile places value on relationship building which will encourage a sense of partnership between customer and vendor. Hence resulting in better communication.   Responding to change over following a plan: Agile does not devalue planning. Rather, it places emphasis on the need to recognize that as we make the plan, we might need to change it at some point due to changes in customer needs and other factors.

PRINCE2 Agile® is a flexible governance method for project delivery. The PRINCE2 Agile® methodology combines PRINCE2® and Agile methods in a way that both maintains the integrity of the PRINCE2® principles, themes, processes, and delivers the efficiencies and core benefits of Agile method. Therefore, PRINCE2 Agile® provides direction for tailoring PRINCE2® to work in the most effective way in an agile context.

Transparency: ensures that information regarding the ongoing project is readily accessible to anyone with an interest in the work. Collaboration: encourages joint work in teams towards a shared vision. Collaboration also encourages team members to play an active role in project decisions and to take responsibility for their committed outcomes. Communication: the use of important communication tools to support ongoing collaboration and to provide transparency of information. Exploration: empowers teams to research and try potential solution options to verify capabilities and to manage risks as early as possible. Self-organization: encourages the project team to allocate their work in a way that best utilizes the skills and strengths of the team members. Accountability: imbibes the mindset of shared ownership amongst project team members for the successful delivery of the project outcomes.

PRINCE2 Agile® methodology expands on the management of the following project tolerances:

Benefits

Scope

Time

〉  Cost

〉  Quality

〉  Risk

Unlike traditional projects that would monitor all of these tolerances equally, PRINCE2 Agile® takes a different perspective. For example, the PRINCE2 Agile Methodology sees:

〉  Time and Cost as fixed values: they are not expected to vary as the project progresses

〉  Scope and Quality as flexible values: they are likely to vary as the project progresses

〉  Benefits and Risk as possibly flexible: following the judgment of the Project Board and project manager, they could be adjusted as the project progresses
