The PMP Exam Process is unlike other professional certifications, it is a very straight-forward process that allows anyone interested. It is one of those exams that is only meant for tech-savvy candidates.

One of the reasons why the PMP Exam can be regarded as different is the fact that it offers a paper-based exam and also an online exam unlike some other professional certifications that can only be done online.

Meeting the PMP Exam requirement

The first thing that comes to mind after reading this is, what is/are the PMP Exam requirement? This is not some difficult task or some criteria that is unattainable, they are actually for the benefits of the candidates in the end. The PMP Exam requirement is basically a training platform that essentially prepares the PMP candidate for the Certification exams.

You will have to indicate whether you have secondary school leaving certificate or a degree. You will need the name of the institution, the year you graduated, and your course of study.

Project Management Experience: You must have had some project management experience before applying for PMP and the experience must be leading or directing projects that are non-overlapping, cumulative across all process groups. The experience is expected to be over a period of 8 years which is to be counted on the PMI PMP application.

Project Management Education: Also, you are required to show 35 contact hours of project management education, preferably covering initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, and closing. This can be done in form of training and you can easily begin one of such by clicking here

Enroling for the PMP Exam on ‘www.pmi.org’

Registration for the PMP Exam can be easily carried out by following these simple steps:

Go to ‘pmi.org’ site

Click on ‘LOGIN/REGISTER’ Click on ‘Register now’

 At the button of the login form, Fill in your details correctly in the registration form and then click on the ‘CREATE ACCOUNT’ button

After your account is created, click on ‘Certification’ on the main menu

Under the ‘Certification type’ section, click on ‘Project Management Professional (PMP)’

On the right side bar of the page, under the ‘Apply for PMP Certification’ section, click on ‘APPLY NOW’

Under the ‘Certification Program’ section, click on ‘Apply for PMP credential’

 

Follow the registration step one after the other. Please note that this will involve you filing your personal details, educational background, and work experience and so on.

After your application has been approved, you can go on and schedule your exam, be it paper-based or online.

Please note that to enrol for PMP exam, it is not mandatory to be a PMI member; but being a PMI member offers a discount of $11 ($400-$389) for those sitting paper-based exam.

Taking the PMP exam in Nigeria

Both paper-based and online exams are now available for PMP in Nigeria. Candidates who are interested in online PMP exam will have to visit ‘https://www.prometric.com/en-us/clients/pmi/Pages/landing.aspx‘ to schedule their exams.

The PMP paper-based exam is sat at PMI’s PMP exam centres. In Nigeria, the PMP paper-based exam can only be sat in Lagos and Abuja. In Lagos, the PMP exam is sat once every month, while in Abuja, it is sat once every three months. Learn more

PMP Certification Exam Format

There are 200 questions – which are broken down into five stages that include:

Initiation (13%)

Planning (24%)

Executing (31%)

Monitoring and Controlling (25%)

Closing (7%).

The time allowed for the exam is 4 hours.

PMP Item Reference

The PMP Item Reference talks about the PMP exam questions with possible answers. Referencing PMP items is a common practice as it relates to the PMP exams and certifications.

The most popular PMP Item Reference is the PMBoK Guide titled “A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge”. This book contains the five major project management process groups i.e. Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring and controlling, Closing. All these five major process groups are also further explained into a total of 47 processes.

Furthermore, the five process groups also contains ten knowledge areas of project management, which include (in no particular order):

Continuous Credential Requirement

The PMP Continuous Credential Requirement basically has to do with how PMP certificate holders can keep or maintain their certificate and also further their journey in the project management world. The CCR is designed to ensure that PMPs are well equipped and developed to meet the challenging demands of the organizational and business sphere, in order words CCR is concerned with how PMPs can remain relevant and boost their skills.

In a nutshell, the purpose of the CCR program according to PMI is that it should be able to:

Enhance continuous learning and development among certification holders

Provide direction in development areas to ensure relevancy of certified practitioners.

Encourage and recognize individualized learning opportunities.

Offer a mechanism for attaining and recording professional development activities

Sustain the global recognition and value of PMI credentials

All PMPs (except CAMP) are expected to actively maintain their certifications through participation in the CCR program and renewal of their certification(s) every 3 years.

Continuous Credential Requirement (CCR) Essentials         

CCR necessitates that all PMPs earn PDUS so as to actively maintain their certifications. However, PDUS can only be earned in two broad ways, which are:

(1) Education

(2) Giving back to the Profession.

Furthermore it is important to note that CCR necessitates a total of 60 PDUs for the PMP certification. This means a minimum of 35 PDUs from Education and a maximum of 25 PDUs from Giving back to the Profession.

What does it take to become a PMP?

What do I do if my 3 years PMP Certification is almost over?

PMPs do not need to retake the certification exams. All they need to do is to gather 60 PDUs before the expiry date. (This means a minimum of 35 PDUs from Education and a maximum of 25 PDUs from Giving back to the Profession)

How much can I earn as a PMP?

The income of PMP is one of the highest in the world today and that is because they are wanted everywhere. However, how much project managers earn is dependent on factors such as job type, location and years of experience. For Nigeria, project managers can earn up to $28,679 per annum, while a country like South Africa pay their PMPs $68,016

What is the difference between PMP and PRINCE2?

PMP and PRINCE2 are different in a number of ways. Basically, the main difference between them is the fact that PMP is not a methodology, it is based on the PMBoK which is a standard, while PRINCE2 is a methodology with detailed process model and templates.
