What is Lean Six Sigma?

Lean Six Sigma is a management approach to business performance improvement that has blended the two individual specialisms of Lean and Six Sigma.

The application of Lean Six Sigma allows quality and efficiency improvements to be effectively realized. The focus of Lean is about speed, efficiency and taking waste out of a process. Six Sigma focuses on effectiveness and removal of errors.

When combined and implemented properly it can be a powerful management tool that can greatly improve an organization’s performance, by providing a structured approach to resolving problems.

Lean Six Sigma is a collective managerial concept of Lean and Six Sigma. Lean traditionally focuses on the elimination of the eight kinds of waste classified as over-production, defects, waiting, non-utilized talent, transportation, inventory, motion and extra-processing.

About Lean Six Sigma

What is Learn Six Sigma?

The logical approach to explaining or defining Lean Six Sigma is to first state that the term “Lean Six Sigma” is a combination of two terms “Lean” and “Six Sigma” which means two different things. The word “Lean” is synonymous with the term “waste reduction” and the term “Six Sigma” is synonymous to “variation reduction”.

Before now, what we have was Lean and Six Sigma (although some people still maintain this), but more recently it is been referred to as LEAN SIX SIGMA without the “and” which is just to show that they are two different process coming together as one.

In clearer terms, Lean Six Sigma can be defined as a fact-oriented, data dependent, methodology that uses well defined processes to prevent defect in service or production within an organization, by reducing variability, waste, duration and also improve work efficiency and standards, leading to customer satisfaction and the creation of a great competitive advantage for such organization.

Lean and Six Sigma complement each other. Lean accelerates Six Sigma, delivering greater results than what would typically be achieved by Lean or Six Sigma individually.

The usefulness of Lean six sigma is not restricted to any particular industry, it can be used in any organization that is involved in creating quality products to customers or those that renders one service or the other to their clients.

Lean Six Sigma is that certification that helps individuals and organizations know how to reduce waste in production or while offering a service, reduce the cycle time and also reduce variability. Organizations who want to be known for consistency in quality in a short period of time need to subscribe to the Lean Six Sigma training and certification.

Lean Six Sigma History

There have been many theories about the origin and history of Lean Six Sigma. Some say, that Henry Ford started the Lean Process with his car assembly line, but more generally accepted is the story of Taiichi Ohno and how he incorporated the Lean Management methodology into the Toyota Production System.

However, the first and proper use of the Lean Six Sigma can be traced to Motorola in the year 1986 where it was used to compete with the Kaizen business model in Japan.

Lean Six Sigma Methodology/Process Model

The Lean Six Sigma Methodology/process model is summarized into what is popularly known as DMAIC:

    Define

    Measure

    Meet

    Analyze

    Improve

    Control

DMAIC is a flow in the order in which they have been listed and more details on each of the term means are highlighted below:

Define: this involves describing the problem to be solved.

Measure: this has to do with the collection of relevant baseline data on the problem

Analyze: as the name suggests, this compares the collected data to the problem and identify the root cause of the problem.

Measure: this has to do with the collection of relevant baseline data on the problem

Improve: this involves brainstorming to come up with the most probable solutions, out of which the best is selected and tested.

Control: this is the last stage of the process model/methodology and it involves sustaining the gains, statistical process control, cost benefit analysis, control plan and mistake proofing.

Exam preparation

The Lean Six Sigma Exam can be adequately prepared for in two ways which are:

The Lean Six Sigma Classroom training

    Self-study

The Lean Six Sigma Classroom Training

As the name suggests, this is an instructor-led training platform that is aimed at preparing candidates for the Lean Six Sigma certification exams.

At Harrybaker Training Institute, we have a well-structured training platform that is designed not only to prepare candidates for the exams but also equip them via our creative learning engagement methods to be able to apply the Lean Six Sigma principles and processes to improve processes within their organizations.

This training is led by a certified trainer with several years of both field and classroom experience acquired locally and internationally. The trainer guides the candidates with his wealth of experience on the things to expect on the examination day and how they can be effectively managed or answered in the case of questions.

The Lean Six Sigma Classroom training is very much advisable above every other method of preparation, considering that the course is quite complex and some of its processes need a proper explanation.

Self-Study

This is another method of preparing for the certification exams. This has to do with those candidates who prefer to study on their own without the help of any professional trainer or certified individual. This is often done using the Lean Six Sigma Study Manual and other related materials.

As easy and convenient as this may seem, it is not in any way advisable as compared to the Lean Six Sigma Training in a classroom. This is because it may eventually cause the candidate more harm than good.

Exam Format

This is according to the qualifications Lean Six Sigma offers and they are highlighted below:

Yellow Belt Exam Format

Exam sitting process

The Lean Six Sigma Exam sitting process ought to start with the meeting of prerequisites, but since it does not have any eligibility criteria other than a University education or its equivalent, the process begins with the registration.

Proper registration for the exam is very essential, so as to ensure that there is no mix up of personal information or the provision of wrong answers to the questions asked. Prospective candidates can contact us here for help with exam registration.

How to sit for the Lean Six Sigma Exam

The Lean Six Sigma Exam can be taken in two ways which are:

    online

    offline

ONLINE

We do not advise Candidates to take the online method considering the nature of electricity and unreliable internet connection in Nigeria

The Online examination portal is structured in a way that it does not allow for any interruption during the exam, if this happens, the exam will be automatically ended and the candidate will eventually lose out.

However, Candidates who insist on taking their Lean Six Sigma Exam online will have to bear the cost of registering afresh in the case of any interruption during the exam.

OFFLINE

The Offline which is Paper-based is more advisable because it cannot be affected by epileptic power supply or poor internet connection. It is not disadvantaged by the delay in results as some might think.

The Paper-based exam is written in an accredited exam center like Harrybaker Training Institute at a specific date and time convenient for the candidate. I.e. the candidate gets to choose when he/she wants to write the exams.

NB: Candidates should notify us of their preferred date and time at least two days before the date, so we can make adequate preparations. Please check the tab on “how it works” for more details.

Candidates will get their result immediately after the examination as it will be marked by a standby scanner on-ground.

The original certificate will be sent two weeks after the exams.
